I too think that a lot of people are generally capable of empathy, and like you say they're either ignorant or apathetic to the support of certain groups because there are a lot of things going on. However it'd be like if I saw a friend unironically watching and enjoying that Ben Shapiro movie-

-won't care if they're asked to give something more serious up if it means making a friend more comfortable or at bare minimum to make them feel safe. If they won't give up something that is to them pretty low stakes, but to a minority is fairly important...
