gotten to the point in japanese learning where I need to start brute forcing godan vs ichidan verbs and I'm thinking about just fully fucking losing my mind instead

Bonus: it should go without saying that the translations in the 例 will be dependent on context. Bonus 2: 〜そう can be attached to adjectives and functions in a similar manner, e.g. 高そう. Bonus 3: Be careful with godan verbs ending in 〜す: their volitional form also ends in 〜そう. 例:⚠️干そう≠干しそう≠干すそう≠干したそう

The first form uses the verb stem. The second and third use plain forms (present/past) Using the verb stem makes 〜そう a statement on apparent potential or perceived "seems like (it) might" The latter two are about hearsay, such as a rumor or report from another person. ※~そう has other uses as well.

Japanese grammar tip, in my eternal crusade against pure vibes-based learning: The meaning of v.〜そう depends on the verb form it is attached to. Don't mix them up! 例:(できる) できそう – It seems like they can do it. できるそう – I heard that they can do it. できたそう – I heard that they were able to do it. 1/3
