never mind that Hipkins' falsehood was an error, a failure to account for a currency difference (despite $1 AUD to an Australian being practically equivalent as $1 NZD to an NZer) and Luxon's is a whopper of a lie, something he simply must know to be untrue, and the press equivocates them as "false"
Show Postfalse *equivalence* argh. anyway. this "four Pinocchios" stuff is a joke for a good reason; in stripping context back to simple true/false binaries you abdicate all the explaining power of the press. assigning context to facts is why you exist. you're not a spreadsheet, stop pretending to be one
Show Postyes I know why the press is legally cautious, but you can still assign magnitude to things, as that falls under honest opinion. The magnitude of falsehoods matter, esp. given the false equivocation that Newsroom gives them in the headline - which as you know, lots of readers don't read past
Show PostSo Luxon lied about both an 18 billion fiscal hole and increasing the minimum wage to keep up with inflation. BUT Hipkins got the price of a block of butter in an Australian supermarket wrong. So apparently they're as bad as each other, well done Newsroom.
Show PostI think that's pretty evasive; the fact is Newsroom has framed this like the falsehoods are equivalent for maximum conflict-juicing, when the truth - Hipkins was wrong about a little, Luxon about a lot - is neatly abandoned with a wave of "oh readers can figure THAT out"
