@craiggidney.bsky.socialOpenAI’s faster Fourier transform is less a mathematical breakthrough and more a malicious exploit of mathematical traditions.
Show PostThat noise you're hearing is all the cryptographers working on PQC (and particularly lattices, but a breakthrough like that would have likely had far reaching consequences beyond just lattices) collectively breathing out after holding their breath for a week. https://eprint.iacr.org/2026/1693
Show Post4/6 For my 2024 story we specifically asked what "operational" meant. PsiQ said they aimed, in Brisbane, to turn on a fault tolerant "commercially useful quantum computer in 2027". A lengthy fact check chat conversation confirmed this (our full article here) www.nature.com/articles/d41...
Show PostMy guess was under six months, not because the result was easy or such, but because people are goddam smart, especially when they know there is an answer (the barrier of not knowing whether you are in the yes or no case is what makes research so god damn hard)
Show PostAh they broke the proof not found better circuits. My bet is on finding equivalent or better circuits. Still awesome stuff “It turns out that programming a quantum computer is way more challenging than I anticipated, and this is because of the requirements of reversibility and uncomputation”
