A lot of rich people own them and gamble on them, and get them to compete in arbitrary contests, paying others to breed new ones and train them up. The general public is encouraged to bet on them too, but a lot of the big investment is from oligarchs competing for status.

Reading this again and Paul has the analogy exactly backwards. AI's are like horses. The feeling of exhilaration as you ride them is there, but so is the effort to rein them in and keep them on track, and stabling them and clearing up their shit is actually most of the hobby.
