Susan Collins and Joe Manchin both won in the other side's turf, both strategically defected from their party, both criticized their side when necessary ... but it seems like Manchin did a lot more things like giving big splashy interviews in big media outlets about how terrible his side is.

The problem is always that on Congressional and Senate maps that are tilted so badly towards Republicans, the optimal strategy *in all of the individual competitive elections* is usually to run as a bipartisan problem solver even while the optimal strategy for the party as a whole is to trash Trump

This even goes to Dem leadership, who in theory would be great guys to trash Trump, but often realize that the key elections are Joe Blue Dog running in a Trump +16 district and that saying Trump sucks ass helps that guy less than saying "uh border security and affordability"
