I guess the modern, maybe even Trumpist, view might be that we don't need to be morally superior to them. We just have to be superior. So we can be just as bad as they are. The idea of foreign activities as some sort of moral crusade has died.

Indeed. Anecdotally, when I moved to London from France I worked in a hotel in 93 in which former soldiers, now working for Saudis in protection, stayed. One had served in Malaysia. He hated what had happened there, and opined it was not what soldiers should be doing. I.e., soldiers also want ethics
