This kangaroo apparently swam 1 mile across an estuary from South Stradbroke Island to the mainland in 2021. They swim to escape predators, to cool off on hot days, or just because they feel like it. The shark-filled waters of the Great Barrier Reef may be protecting us from a hopping horde.

And they're actually surprisingly good at it. Powerful rear legs provide forward motion & the muscular tail helps maintain orientation & trim. The tail motion is reminiscent of a fish or alligator. They're observed crossing lakes, rivers, even short distances by sea to travel to/from islands.
