a team of like 7 spent 5 years building a full simulation of the system that ran faster than real time so we could detect the ones that were going to cause problems the weirdest bug I ever saw was caused by a vendor change in our wireless switch provider

people vastly overestimate how well understood most commercial software is. in my first job, i was one of ~5 people who had a working understanding of how most of our system worked. in a 300ish person company like people understood parts of it, but there were always weird systems effects.
