that’s part of it, isn’t it? I don’t know where this sign was, but in the US, we learn very little about Ottoman history. I certainly didn’t. Only in the last few years have I started to learn. Literally this summer I learned about the reshuffling between Greece and Turkey after the Ottomans.

I'd say Mehmed V, but most of the guys who went on to found Palestinian nationalism fought for the Ottomans until 1918. Whoever made the sign really needs to read some books.

It's not something I'd expect most Americans to know much about, but my hot take is the Ottomans bear a lot of responsibility for the state of things in regions they ruled for centuries.
