It's incredible how so many people just simply don't believe anyone is capable of indepedent political action. Weirdly Eastern European Governments don't need the State Department or MI% whispering in their ear to be suspicious of the Russians, and want some allies!

Even a recent article in the LRB sort of goes "well of course the Russians are anxious, now that we let NATO expand east" as if deliberately telling the Baltic states, Poles and Finns to fuck off would somehow have been both a) moral and b) something that would have satisfied the Russians
