It sounds more like "rat" and ties into a bunch of stuff about Democracy vs a Republic. The Republicans absolutely have been doing this on purpose, and it is an insult when used deliberately. It's just foolish to assume that anyone who repeats the incorrect name is a secret Republican.

Show PostIf you want to be very careful and not be accused of these things, always say "Democratic Party". "Democrats" is ok, but not "Democrat Party". But honestly, I think people overreact.
Show PostMost of the people who will get mad at you are ridiculous people you don't need to take seriously. This is more about avoiding stupid fights than about persuading anyone.
