Health, Money, Items, favors, information, these are all tools the Players have at their disposal that may be taxed instead of the Success of a Roll. Because they NEED TO BE TAXED. There has to be some friction, meaning conflict, meaning catharsis when they find their own way forward.

The common currency for these taxes are the Dice Rolls, dependent of how they have built their Character. However, no Roll is guaranteed to succeed, so alternate taxes or payment methods should be available for them, lest the story just stalls by pure chance.

I think my philosophy as a GM (and Game Designer) can be reduced to: TAX THEM, BUT LET THEM THROUGH. Any barrier to the Player's progression should be a tax they have to pay to the story to justify they are its protagonists. #ttrpg #rpg #gamedesign
