I've never read the book myself, but it's been said by some folks that the movie is a significant improvement over it. There's a book subplot that the movie thankfully excised from the story involving an affair between Hooper and Chief Brody's wife.

Peter Benchley regretted writing the book, because it villainized sharks. Thousands of sharks became victims of human hunters because they were wrongly thought of as predators. Benchley pointed out that the majority of sharks do not harm human beings. Lightning is a bigger threat than sharks.
