Means-testing is the enemy. It's a trick — a sham. It erodes social cohesion. It stigmatizes. We must escape this notion of deserving and undeserving and drawing arbitrary lines that only serve to divide us. Instead, we should provide universally and tax the rich appropriately.

It is imperative that our survival be disconnected from employment and connected instead to citizenship, or even better, a basic human right to existence. The arrangement we have of dependence on finding an employer to sponsor our survival cannot and should not be considered by anyone as being just.

It's nice to see that the NYT followed a few recipients of basic income to observe how it impacted their lives, but one-year "pilots" are too short. They need to be at least 2 years, and their point is not permanent improvement, because UBI is meant as a permanent floor no one can ever fall beneath.
