cf durable objects landed a similar trick with the websocket hibernation api, the DO gets evicted from memory while the socket stays open and you only get billed when a message actually wakes it back up. no more paying to hold a connection open doing nothing.

the lambda in the middle pattern earns its keep the moment you need validation or a virus scan before the object lands, otherwise it's just latency and cold start tax for no reason. presigned PUT direct to S3 is underused for the pure passthrough case
