Well yes this is the crux isn't it: the UK has never collectively accepted that it is now a middle-power, and is still trying to act as though it is a super-power. Until it can figure that out it will never be able to move forward.

As fun as it is to see Keir Starmer eat shit, once he's replaced the entire right wing establishment - which includes most of the British press - will be calling for a general election. Never mind that the last Tory term had two leadership changes without a GE, the right is immune to hypocrisy.

But Labour would also then face an election in the more important mayoral seat Burnham would have left, and would be at a real risk of losing instead. It would also cost them a lot of money to fight the mayoral election at a time they are rebuilding party funds post GE.
