Not everyone can afford new market-rate units, but many people can! If you don't build new market-rate housing, those of us who can't afford it then have to compete with those who could for *existing* homes on the market. Guess what that does to the price of the existing housing supply?

I will never for the life of me understand why the Tenant Union Federation is in hardline opposition to a land use approach that we know strengthens the bargaining power of tenants. It's like if the AFL-CIO was staunchly opposed to full employment.
