They loved each other and love doesn’t mean romance. They just were best friends and loved each other. I mean, Jay & Silent Bob are lifelong heterosexual couple. I saw Ian & Patrick in the same light. And he showed it was normal to show affection for another man.

He kissed Sir Ian often enough in public, I'm not surprised someone took their deep affection as an actual relationship. The LGBTQ+ community couldn't ask for a stronger cishet ally than Sir Patrick.
