I really don't see why Burnham kept her or permits this. She is cut from the same cloth as Patel and Braverman, and a lot of the electorate has rejected this flavour of ethno-nationalism.

I'd also note there is absolutely *zero* political cost, and both economic and political upsides, to simply not applying any changes retrospectively! The Times, Tories and the whole spectrum of xenophobes/racists in commentariat/media will cry betrayal anyway. Why try, and fail, to appease them?
