People feeling the need to offer commentary and critique about people's grief is one of the most frustrating aspects of social media for me. It irks me even when the deceased have genuine flaws that are worthy of discussion, and it frustrates me even more when someone was just plain good and decent.

I used some pedagogical moves (let them read/take some directed notes before then discussing, did a little pre-writing), but the real teaching was that I showed them I care and know a lot about what I’m teaching them. If we want good teaching, we need to foster environments that make this possible.
