I think a good diagnostic for people on here is: 1. Ask yourself what percentage of millennials nationwide are homeowners 2. Write that number down 3. Look up the actual number
Show PostPeople’s preferences are insane. They want careers in New York and Santa Monica and San Jose but can afford to live in Sterling Kansas.
Show Postthis is correct, the closer-in suburbs are too expensive. notably policies encouraging density (which I support, to be clear) would *not* help with this, since the people looking to live in those homes want to live in sparse sfh neighborhoods with yards and garages etc
Show PostIt also reflects that the affordability issue extends to the suburbs. You need to commute from the Poconos to find an affordable home in the NYC area. The closer-in suburbs are too expensive for people on typical incomes to afford!
Show PostWhat Bluesky posters seemingly do not grasp is that MOST OF THE US POPULATION IS SUBURBAN. Over half of America lives in a suburb. In major metros, 80%+ of people live in a suburb or exurb. If you’re trying to understand the experience of average Americans, you’re talking about suburban trends.
