Haven't made Mickey Mouse pancakes in 10 years, so proud to pull it off this morning for our granddaughter Julia. Up from Florida the first time, she's the main Halloween attraction. Happy she hoofed along on our Ramble with Lady at the Izaac Walton Preserve. Oldest son made sure she didn't fall in.

Chuck Campbell and I explored Thorn Creek yesterday. It emits that faint odor of urban industrial waters. First slack area (boot-sucking muck/washed-out banks) gave a bluegill. Chuck suggested above the bridge. Looked like northern WI or MI. Half a dozen creek chubs off the side of the main riffle

Grilled a wild goose breast, which I bagged with Jeff Norris's Fox Valley Guide Service in January. Used MeatEater's basic game marinade, topped it with an Amish black raspberry jam. Plated with cucumber and tomato slices from Van Der Griend Farm Stand in Lynwood. Paired with mid-range Malbec. Yes.

I'm hunting near Cherry Springs, Pennsylvania, commonly known as the darkest spot east of the Mississippi River. Before my morning ramble, I was able to take this shot of Orion the Hunter, my favorite constellation. I guess I will find out if it translates to social media.

On my morning ramble, I surprised the s*** out of Ezra along Lake Springfield. He was targeting blue catfish with heavy catfish rods, 65-pound braided with a 30-pound mono leader using circle hooks with live bluegill or cut shad. As I circled back, he happily latched into his biggest of the fall.
