I found that tech and data leadership role feels like a lot of the parts of academia I loved (collaboration, mentoring, teaching, strategizing) but without the stuff I don't like (competition etc.) Also, I still partner with schools to do academic mentoring too.

I'm almost 7 years out of professional astro now. The hyper specialized knowledge is just some cool lore about me, or like a fun fact/hobby. The technical stuff is all there still, have changed subject matter a few times since. Mentoring is still a big part of my role too!

Whenever I read about academics in long term positions separated from their kids long term I’m always shocked. It’s just a JOB. No one wishes on their deathbed that they wrote one more paper.

Year three of being “the book house” in our neighborhood. Gave away 200 books, a bunch of chapter books, middle grade, and YA for the teens that came through. Makes me happier than I can say. ❤️ I also give out candy too, relax.

We got our first trick-or-treaters ever this year! (We’ve been in this house since 2012). One group of 5 very polite children and a mom. I guess we have a real reason to keep buying Halloween candy now 😂
