I mean, they were called awful because all three of them were awful, some of them in fun ways, but still. They all have their severe flaws. Ep3 drowns under it's requirement not to fuck over canon, Ep2's entire main plot disappears into a plothole, and then there's Ep1 and... you know, the racism.

Why does the antagonist faction have slitty eyes, chinese accents, a massive trade federation and are literal bugmen George? Why is Jar Jar a CGI Gollywog George? Why is Watto a hook nosed, scraggle bearded, hunchbacked merchant who lives in the desert with literal jesus child as his slave George!?

It's telling that of all of that, Watto was the only one George actually felt the need to try and defend by claiming he was based on an Italian Car Salesman he knew. And like, yeah, sure, but I bet he didn't live in the desert and have Space Jesus as a servant did he? Which is a whole other thing.
