Yes, he spoke about it frequently. Everyone knew what his father was doing to the family, almost no one did anything. I think it's very clear that he thought extremely hard throughout his life about what an actor could offer in creating models of masculinity that were not violent.

My Mum was older than Sir Patrick, but grew up literally just round the corner (maybe 100yds away) from his family in Mirfield, West Yorkshire. She sometimes spoke of her childhood memories of his father’s violence towards his wife and children. Everyone knew.
