there’s also some (bad) polling on this showing stuff like 60-40 type splits for suburbia (with annoyingly vague assumptions like “imagine housing was cheaper in cities”) and this is usually read as “americans prefer suburbs” not “2x as many people want to live in major cities than actually do”

I can live without a car in Chicago. In suburbs where I can do the same, housing isn’t really cheaper. And in suburbs where I’d need a car, the cost difference isn’t large enough to offset the annual cost of owning a car.
