This problem can and must be fixed, in Salem, in this coming legislative session. Public education is a core part of a healthy society. The legislature can fix the kicker & Measures 5 & 50, fully disconnect the tax code, & fix the funding formula. They have that power. They should use it.
Show PostMembers of the Sabin, Irvington, & Beach communities should know I'm interested in getting that information public before any decision is made. Peninsula families should know I'm uncomfortable making a public school desert in Kenton (where I live). IMO, closing James John should be off the table.
Show PostTo state it clearly, I am against the proposed closure plan. The school board's in a difficult spot not of their making, and may have to make difficult decisions including closures, if the state doesn't help, but even then this plan leaves a lot unexplained and uncertain.
Show PostI'm grateful for the work that went into this from all colleagues, but especially @councilortkl.bsky.social & @councilorepg.bsky.social on the letter, @councilorgreen.bsky.social on the state needs, and @councilordanryan.bsky.social on the City investments in schools. More to come. In the meantime:
Show PostI think we can and should go further. I think we must do some of what was in the proposed resolution that didn't get to an agenda (yet). That includes calling on the state to fully disconnect from federal tax code, reform Measures 5 and 50, and fix the kicker. But this is a good start.
