The Colin Spacetwinks theory, which I also subscribe to, is that it's just "trashed bathroom" behavior, which is to say people like this know on an inescapable level that they lack the power and agency to actually push politicians in any direction, and this is how they take out that helplessness

The last, I would say 10 years or so, has been one constant, steady, ongoing object lesson in "your elected officials are increasingly not beholden to you, the citizen, in any way that matters," and when some (a lot) of people are forced to confront that, they revert to punching down and scolding

people have gotten into the more cynical/transphobic of their motivations, but imho a large part is that they know this is a bad move and are panicking to try to make up for it on behalf of the candidates by scolding trans people into voting for them anyways (which won't work)
