Ah yes! I definitely agree! But I think the evangelicals were laying the ground work for it WAYYYYY earlier, like the 90s/00s, and captured a bigger part of white culture once hip-hop became the mainstream. Then it just became a muddle in the 2010s when Bieber etc started merging the worlds

there was an interesting thing happening at the time where evangelical culture did in fact realize that it was simpatico with secular trends (stomp clap, preachers n sneakers) but the relationship was parasitic, not a hijacking like OP suggests
