But why do people say Ukraine could never have made them work? Russia's reasons are obvious, we wish to minimise the scale of the betrayal of Ukraine to minimise our guilt. My appeasers do it as if they minimise it too, the responsibility to assist the people the west betrayed is also less.

So there was a real prospect of Ukriane being a nuclear power. Ukraine, Russia & USA all knew it. US concern was loose nukes. Russia's concern was not being able to invade a former colony. Ukraine's concern was their former colonial occupier would invade them one day Ukraine was right.
