That, in a nutshell, is the empirical part of the paper. The theoretical part of the paper is probably even more exciting. There, we turn to computational learning theory and show that a quantity known as *regret* is the appropriate measure for the cost of selection.
Show PostTo account for this, we extended Kimura's model to including fluctuating environmental conditions, and defined the *mismatch load* as the fluctuating selection analogue of substitution load. Substitution load is then simply the special case of mismatch load with constant fitnesses.
Show PostThe labeled colonies are kind of cool to look at—and you can actually see the substitution process proceeding down each stack of plates in the second image as green colonies replace red ones at successive points in time.
Show PostA decade after beginning the project, Ryan McGee, Olivia Kosterlitz, Artem Kaznatcheev, Ben Kerr, and I have a paper in PNAS this week that is one of the best pieces of work I've ever been involved in. Without paywall: carlbergstrom.com/publications... Below, a thread about (part of) the paper.
Show PostI think this qualifies as Lorem Ipsum for the oped page
