I feel like Kickstarters helped distort the view of what a game actually costs to make. People saw a game get $250k of funding and thought that meant that's what it actually cost, not that it was more of a marketing exercise and proof of concept that there was demand

I saw a story on a major gaming website speculating that Mass Effect 5 would have cost $5 million for EA to finish. If that was the case, BioWare would not have been closed! The gaming industry is where it is right now because big games cost hundreds of millions of dollars to finish.
