i should also say that i actually have no problem whatsoever with north americans claiming to be inheritors of an old world culture as long as they actually practice it in some way that means anything to them whatsoever. my bar is pretty low!

in any case, we have veered wildly off track from my original and sole point here, which is that it's rather more normal to identify as part of a group you have an actual vivid affinity to, like a person of mixed ancestry from cleveland identifying as ohioan, than claiming to be a viking
