These lockouts are not super common but when they happen it is ridiculous. Deep red or blue districts represented by the other party just by virtue of style of primary. It incentivizeses party leaders to pick a preferred candidate early and clear the field to avoid even the risk of a lockout.

These lockouts often happen in states, like MA, where there is a substantial majority for one party. The more popular party usually has more primary candidates who split the vote so the less favorable party with less voters concentrated in fewer candidates can get two of their own into the general.
