I was surprised for my 40th (still mostly bubbling) with a full on set of in character birthday wishes and songs and a cake with handmade edible dice. Which was nice.

I got my first big (to me) fellowship in college. My friends threw me a surprise party, including my prof, & I had to leave the room for 15 minutes. In my (lame) defense, it was Good Friday & I’d been fasting. (My 30th birthday I arranged myself & there was a lot of things on fire — in a good way)

Current Waititi would feel this immense compulsion to undercut... any of this with a bad joke, with a zany quip, with some tension-deflating gag. No bummers, right? And it's infuriating, because once upon a time, the old Waititi *could* be similarly sad!
