We have the same enrollment we had in the early 2010s and the same number of schools. Why close them now? How would closing them create more resources when that's never happened when other districts closed their schools? Or is this the Tobias and Lindsay meme?

I'm all for more kids, but Seattle isn't losing kids and that's not why SPS is looking to close schools. The district is losing enrollment to private schools and other nearby public school districts. But rather than recruit families back, SPS wants to give up and just close schools.

The problem with saying “affluent people are feeling squeezed too” is that it makes you into 2000s Republican. The obvious policy response is tax relief, which then undercuts the redistributive policies necessary to help the people who genuinely can’t afford things.
