This sestertius of Trajan shows the Circus Maximus. On the far left is the arch of Titus, the obelisk is clear in the middle, as are the metae (turning cones) at both ends of the spina. Between the obelisk & the metae on the right, you can make out the dolphins that marked the laps. It’s brilliant.

This is an incredibly well preserved Roman shoe for a woman. It’s around 2,000 years old and was found, and is currently displayed, in a Roman fort known now as The Saalburg in 🇩🇪. The intricate decoration and design is fantastic.

This fantastic mosaic is Byzantine & depicts a duck, lotus flowers and a crocodile (….!), leading me to believe the mosaicist has never seen one, but assured the commissioner he definitely had. The mosaics are from the east church at Theodorias (Qasr in Libya) 🕰️c540AD 📷Jona Lendering #MosaicMonday
