I read an LAT story about why support for a one-time billionaire tax is stalling and the short answer is that the billionaires have spent hundreds of millions of dollars on advertising. It's hard to get around the flaws in our system and also how many people are not critical thinkers.

I have a few acquaintances who were the fence on a billionaire tax and when I asked questions they had a vague concern that the measure was unfair and would hurt the economy. When I asked if they think it makes sense that Zuckerberg pays less tax than they do, they start realizing they've been had.

The way people are manipulated by Cheesecake Factory outrage speaks volumes about how millions will think whatever they're told about class and money. GDP numbers are good today because the top 2% and the the companies firing everyone are doing great. Folks don't see how they are being fucked over.
