The way I'd say it (as someone who isn't a defense attorney) is that defense attorney's are not there to defend the criminals from consequences; they're there to defend the criminals from violations of their human rights.

If I win at trial it is because the state has not met its burden of proof. If I win on appeal it is because the judge or the state committed errors that undermine the outcome of the trial. If win in habeas proceedings it is because the constitution was violated. All of this is justice.
