The idea this is about "regulatory capture" instead is only vaguely more plausible. The argument that by terrifying the government they would ban only open weights models and not OpenAI//Anthropic has not been true. And saying your own model will kill everyone is not necessary for that, or smart.

The argument that AI labs are talking about existential risks as a way of creating hype & inflating their stock prices has always been odd. You don't need to believe them, but telling people your product may murder everyone does not, in fact, encourage people to adopt it or reduce regulatory risks.
