I sometimes get a little frustrated that many politicians serm to lack a grasp of the full meaning of "to govern". But my greater worry was that Peter posted that politics was *supposed to be* downstream of culture, as if it was accepted orthodoxy (which it may be, however wrong it is).

I'm sure plenty of deep thinking I'm not familiar with has gone into the idea that politics should be downstream of culture, but I thought one prime purpose of government was to apply levers to shape our culture. A stark example might be the ending of the death penalty against popular opinion, ....
