We spent a week in Oct 21 on the Somme, looking for my wife's Grt Granddad's comrades. He survived High Wood. Most didn't. The weather didn't help, but that feeling of "otherworldlyness" was unshakable. 2 years later I found out my grt grt uncle died on the first day. They didn't find his body.

Based on the original musical. There were still a lot of WW1 veterans alive when it came out and it prompted them to talk about the war for the first time. It might be a bit dated now but it really hit home at the time.

The film Oh What a Lovely War! came out when I was a teen and I still can't think of, or describe, the last scene of the vast war cemetery without crying.

On a motorcycle tour I passed one. I don't believe in "Woo" but I swear the temperature dropped, despite it being a bright sunny day. I also watched a flock of birds split and fly around the cemetery rather than fly over. Another rider brought up the same observations at dinner, so not just me.
