@bouledenerfs.bsky.socialSweet Danger is great fun, but somehow for me it always feels like the last bit of the "juvenile phase" for Campion. I can't quite decide if Amanda is fully realised in her first appearance; for me it's really the (interesting if problematic) Fashion in Shrouds where she really comes into docus
Show PostI saw *parts of* the adaptations when younger, but they never registered particularly; I think it was solely through the 2nd hand Penguins that I got into her oeuvre.
Show PostDavison is perfectly fine, but I can't help wishing for a modern remake where they are a little less beholden to the conventions and production constraints of those adaptations. There was a window about 10-15 years ago when I think Nicholas Lyndhurst would have made a good post-war Campion
Show PostI always have a suspicion that "Peter and Harriet" are supposed to be more well-rounded chracters, or a more deeply portrayed relationship, than "Albert and Amanda". But if I'm honest, I'll pick the latter over the former any time
Show PostI'm never confident that I can claim Allingham's books were *better* than Christie's or Sayers's, but having done my semi-regular reread of Traitor's Purse, I am reminded why I always feel that my heart belongs more to the Campion-verse than to the other two authors
