If the UK was threatening to invade the Netherlands, Russian trip-wire forces stationed there would pretty obviously reduce the risk of war. Is that controversial?

You're right, an irredentist imperialist thug is far less likely to invade a country whose borders are less defensible. Smart observation. You must also think Ukraine having a properly and fully equipped military before 2022 would've made a full-scale invasion more likely and not less.

If the roles were reversed and the UK was an expansionist dictatorship with designs on France and the Russians were a French ally then yes, Russian planes based in Western Europe would be a reasonable deterrent.
