It's really common for American's with anglicized versions of non-English names to believe that the immigration officials changed it, and largely that didn't happen, people changed their own names to be less ethnic

This is, after all, the newspaper that published The Pentagon Papers at a point where that was a genuinely groundbreaking and risky proposition. I doubt the NYT of that era would have been caught dead being as craven as it's become.
