The jurisprudence on citizenship is crystal clear in the US: unless you emphatically and explicitly renounce it (and pay a substantial tax for your troubles) you simply cannot lose a legally obtained citizenship. And being born in the US, the Pope is and remains a US citizen.

"but what if you serve in a foreign army?" - which part of "only if you explicitly renounce citizenship" was unclear? "But what if you take the citizenship of a country at war with the US?" - seriously, did I stutter?
