Show PostThe bit that's been repeated ad nauseam since Stewart left us — when asked if audiences will want to see a bald captain, the Great Bird replied with something pithy along the lines of "In the future, no one will care about baldness" — that's pure Roddenberry hucksterism. The man could sell a myth.
Show PostRoddenberry liked him, even as he was looking at other actors like Roy Thinnes, Mitch Ryan, and Yaphet Kotto(!!!). There was even a screen test with a toupee, and in the end Roddenberry went against his more capitalist impulses and went for the best actor for the role.
Show PostI'm seeing a bit of whitewashing around Gene Roddenberry and Patrick Stewart's casting as Jean-Luc Picard. Roddenberry was very commercial-minded and balked at casting a bald man, but Robert H. Justman was insistent after seeing him perform Shakespeare. Rick Berman supported this. 🧵
