Perhaps I’m just in a better mood these days, but I came across a lot more work I found relevant and interesting at #EMNLP2026 than the past couple conferences. also a nice venue. all the more impressive given the paper deluge. many thanks to the organizers! (and also to the lea.ac team :) )

Dirk: The way we define safety and alignment is close to meaningless. “Safe + aligned” is not inherent in a model, solved by a universal approach, but for the relationship between an individual user and model. We’re abdicating responsibility and becoming obsolete as a field, a worse version of HCI.
