There was deep animosity towards the U.K. due to the Boer War. Anyone fighting the British was considered a friend and many Germans had come to help the Boers. My great-grandmother was in a British concentration camp and all her children who were imprisoned there with her died. That rage lingered.

My Dad tells of how he and his cousin snuck into a meeting of a far right party back in the day, where the crowd was chanting their leader's name "Hertzog". My Dad's cousin shouts "Wie's die grootse sog?" (who's the biggest swine?) The crowd goes "Hertzog!" They barely escaped with their lives.
